Abstract

From its origins, Western political tradition found in the other an alien identity through which it was possible, by opposition, to define the identity of the community members not only for being citizens but, fundamentally, for being men. In this way, politics has officiated as a boundary that allows to distinguish and to separate that which is the typical sphere of mankind and its community from that which is typical of animals and the gods but also of sick persons, criminals and degenerates. However, this tradition seems to have become obsolete, in our time, when two phenomena that mark most of the current world’s everydayness converge: on the one hand, the nullification of personality and, with it, the elimination of the will itself and, therefore, of the typical human component; on the other hand, the appearance of a diffuse enemy that is confused with each of us but whose essential characteristic is its inhumanity. Thus, the world population coincides with that characteristic that is typical of those who do not belong to the human race making it impossible to distinguish the other and internalizing the war against terrorism towards our own cities. These issues will be dealt with in this article.
