Money in the Corporate Imagination of Space Futures

The hypothesis of this article is that a capitalist commodification of space is driving largely unprecedented futurizations of space life, with money as the main protagonist. In response to this, the article aims to clarify how links between techno-imagination, money, and space colonization are currently being established in the configuration of a specific futurization. Focusing on American agents, the characteristics of New Space are detailed, in contrast with space exploration during the Cold War. Next, aspects of the history of money in modernity are reconstructed to understand the rise and development of cryptocurrencies, a fundamental asset in the new imaginaries. Subsequently, the article offers a critical view of space exploration, seeking to weigh the novelties brought by corporate domination, through the analysis of techno-corporate futurizations of money, their implications in the present, and the possibilities they incubate, considering political and social aspects such as sovereignty, regulation, and the ethical and environmental consequences of this new phase of exploration.
